Upcycling & Recycling

Recycling vs. Upcycling

Recycling takes consumer materials — mostly plastic, paper, metal and glass — and breaks them down so their base materials can be remade into a new consumer product, often of lesser quality.

When you upcycle an item, you aren’t breaking down the materials. You may be refashioning it — like cutting a t-shirt into strips of yarn — but it’s still made of the same materials as when you started. Also, the upcycled item is typically better or the same quality as the original.

Why we are serious about upcycling

What is the difference?

Upcycling is a simple concept, but really,  the amount of garbage on the landfills that we can reduce, is enough to make an enormous impact on the environment.

The best part of upcycling is that you can upcycle just about anything.  Recycling and upcycling are often used interchangeably, however, the Plaasmol encourages and educate our visitors on the fundamental differences between these two.

With recycling, you take paper, glass, metal and plastic and sort it to be broken down to every item's own separate and individual components, then you process it, and build a complete new item.

In upcycling, it is possible to use only your creativity and any product, to convert and update it into a creatively new, more useful and functional item.

The Plaasmol is quite well known for all the wonderful quirky signs, items and colourful splashes of upcycled items,  and we like encourage our visitors to take their time and walk about the premises with their cameras to capture some unusual finds and gather ideas for their own homes.

Annually, the Plaasmol also host the "SPORE OPI SAND" festival -  a wonderful get together with live local music, arts, crafts, family and interesting information and guidelines on recycling and upcycling.

Do your recycling at the Plaasmol and deposit your waste into the allocated bins in our parking area -  from here, our team will sort and select what can be re-used, recycled and upcylced from your "trash".
